The game of golf, unlike other ball games, cannot be played on the same playing space, and the ability to deal with the different conditions encountered on various courses is an important aspect of playing. Courses typically have either nine or 18 holes, regions of terrain that each contain a cup. It is which is the hole that holds the ball. Every hole has a teeing surface to start from, and a putting surface with the cup. There are numerous regular terrain types that are between the teeing area and the green. These include the fairway (higher grass) and the rough (lower grass) and hazards like rocks, water, and sand-filled bunkers. Every hole on the course of golf is unique. It is either match play or stroke play. Stroke play, particularly played at the highest level, is the most common style of play.
